Internship Program (HIP)
Volunteer Internship Program (VIP)
A special group of graduate and undergraduate students
participate in this program at FBI Headquarters in Washington,
D.C. each summer.
This program begins the first Monday in June and ends the second
Friday in August. This program offers students an exciting
insider's view of the FBI operations and provides an opportunity
to explore the many career opportunities within the FBI. The
deadline for application is October 10th each year.
Requirements:
- Undergraduate students must be between their junior and
senior years, attending a college or university full-time.
- Graduate students must be enrolled in a college or
university, attending full-time.
- All applicants must be returning to their respective
schools for at least one semester immediately following the
completion of the internship.
- Students must be attending a college or university that
is accredited by one of the regional or national
institutional associations recognized by the United States
Secretary of Education.
- Students must have a minimum cumulative grade point
average (GPA) of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale.
- All students must be citizens of the United States.
- Undergraduate Interns are paid at the GS-6 grade scale.
- Graduate Interns are paid at the GS-7 grade level.
- All applications should be forwarded to the FBI field
office nearest to the student's school by October 10th each
year.

The Volunteer Internship is designed to allow college students to volunteer their services to the FBI while earning college credit. Students are required to work a minimum of 16 hours per week for a minimum of 12 weeks. This internship is available through the Richmond Division which also has offices in Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, Roanoke, Bristol, Lynchburg and Winchester.
Requirements:
- Permission from the student's educational institution to perform duties without compensation.
- A general non-disclosure agreement.
- An FBI-Educational Institution Placement Agreement.
- All agreements must be properly signed by the FBI, the educational institution, and the student.
- Each student must work a minimum of 16 hours per week for a minimum 12 week period.
- Students selected to participate in this program must be attending, not less than part-time, a college or university that is accredited by one of the regional or national institutional associations recognized by the United States of Education.
- Students must successfully complete a 259 background investigation, preemployment polygraph and a urinalysis.
